Once a year, a group of people who rendered great service to Toruń, is presented with the Award of the Mayor of Toruń. The idea behind the award is to honour those who, in a special way with their daily work, activity and involvement, serve Toruń and its citizens and contribute to the promotion of Toruń.

Awards are individual and are given to natural persons for outstanding achievements in the preceding calendar year or for lifetime achievements in one of the specified categories. Honouring these people highlights that city authorities recognize valuable initiatives and reward those who have influence on the modern face of the city. The award is given for outstanding achievements in the preceding calendar year or for lifetime achievements in a given category. Awards granted by the Mayor of Toruń in the following categories:

• entrepreneurship,
• education,
• health care,
• arts and culture,
• physical culture,
• promotion of the city,
• care for human beings,
• generosity or courage.

Deadlines for nominating candidates and a date of awarding ceremony are set annually by the Mayor of Toruń and made available to the public. Applications for the award may be submitted by: Mayor of Toruń, Toruń City Council committees, departments and offices of Toruń City Hall, social organizations and group of residents of Toruń of at least 50 people (a list with the names of the applicants, PESEL numbers and signatures of the applicants is required).

Applications should include: personal information of a candidate for the award (name, surname, date and place of birth, parents' names, address, PESEL number, income tax identification number – NIP, phone number), name of the category to which the candidate is declared, justification, including information about specific achievements of a candidate. Evaluation and selection of winners from among the proposed candidates is made by the Mayor of Toruń. The Mayor has the right not to grant the award in a given category. The winners receive equal financial awards, whose amount is determined annually by the Mayor of Toruń, and statuette of Toruń Rafter. The ceremony of presenting awards takes place in a solemn manner.

Documentation on the awards is compiled and maintained by the Promotion Department of Toruń City Hall.
