"Kontakt" International Theatre Festival

The Toruń festival is one of the most significant theatre reviews organised in Poland. It takes place continuously since 1991, and nowadays every two years, alternating with the National Debutant Festivals "Pierwszy Kontakt".

The "Kontakt" created an opportunity to review and promote the most interesting theatrical events from Central and Eastern Europe and to confront them with theatres from Western Europe. It becomes the mediator in the multinational, often challenging agreements in the new reality. The importance of the festival is created primarily by the artistic value of presented performances. The repertoire is an effect of very careful verification and selection process performed by the qualification commission.

The festival invites primarily theatres from the countries which neighbour Poland, however, there are many exceptions to this rule. The previous editions were attended by theatres from Australia, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Georgia, Spain, Holland, Ireland, Yugoslavia, South Korea, Lithuania, Latvia, Germany, Norway, Polish, Russian, Romanian, Switzerland, Sweden, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, the USA, Uzbekistan, Hungary, Great Britain, Vietnam, Italy.

Each year, the festival hosts more than a hundred international observers (theatre professionals, critiques, students of theatre schools, directors of European theatre festivals), radio and television journalists.

The "Kontakt" festival includes special events – art exhibitions, film screenings, concerts. Presentations of performances are accompanied by meetings with artists, which are a very important feature of the festival.

The "Kontakt" festival is a contest, thus all performances which are held withis it are evaluated by the international jury, which grants three main festival awards.

The Wilam Horzyca Theatre is the organiser of the festival.
